Workshops

Second Polish-Israeli Research Seminar, University of Haifa, Israel

(April 2009)

The Vanished City

The workshop seeks to examine the spatial history of cities in Poland that exist, and at the same time do not. The workshop aims to analyze, from a multi-disciplinary perspective,  the construction and structuring process of the Polish pre-war multi-faceted urban space, its disappearance during the WWII and the Holocaust and eventually, the reconstruction of the urban space in post-war Poland, a process involving both remembrance and oblivion. Our aim is to examine the experiences of Poles and Jews possessing different linguistic, national, religious and class leanings within the same urban texture.

The workshop aims to assign a central place to the urban experience of Polish city dwellers during three recent periods: The period preceding World War II and the Holocaust, the War and Holocaust periods and the post-War period.
